You do not need to spend the next 15 years of your life trying to repay a student loan that you borrowed. You may even have to move back with your parents until you can manage on your own.
I have never taken a student loan because I wanted to graduate college as free as a bird. I have the choice of spending an extra year to work and study without a loan or finish on time with the loan. Well,I must say that up until this point I am debt free and I just have a year and a half to go.
Most of my colleagues are finish and keep complaining that the student loan bureau is withdrawing too much from their salary. Not only that but the interest rates keep increasing and their pictures were placed in the papers if they did not meet the deadlines on a monthly basis.
At the end of the month, they only have money for transportation to carry them back to work for the coming month. Here I will be providing you with some easy strategies that you can use to repay the loan in a quicker and more efficient time span.
Make a Payment Plan.
My adviser usually tells me that if I fail to plan, I plan to fail. You need to have a plan as to when you will be making payments, how much it will be and the time span that it will take. Almost everything in life is negotiable and this is one aspect. Sit with your loan servicing agents and talk things over.
Some agencies give a time span in which you have to repay the loan. it can be 10- 20 years, depending on what you studied and how much you took. You do not want to take this long to repay your loan.
Start making payments as soon as you finish college. Ensure that each month you are putting in more than the amount that is required from you. This is an effective method.
Also, if you should get a raise or a bonus at work, please don’t go out shopping or be doing some other stuff with the money. Make the sacrifice and put the extra dollars towards your loan payment.
Be realistic in your approach and always try to meet the deadline that is given you to pay.
Make a Budget
When repaying a loan you have to make it a priority. The reason why many college graduates find themselves taking 15-20 years to repay a loan is because they do not see it as a priority. They rather achieve all others goals instead of covering their debts first.
If you don’t need a new car don’t get one. Repaying a student loan means to live on the basic necessities. You do not need to go clothes shopping every month, eat out every night or giving yourself a treat too often, limit your spending. Really all that you need is the basic necessities, Food, shelter and clothing.
Hold back on the credit card spending and try the envelope system. This is where you put cash for the week or month that you will need in it and when it is finish, it is just finish. This will help you to keep tabs on your spending habits.
Just live within your means. You may be working hard and believe that you need to enjoy life by blowing up a few dollar on things like taking a trip etc. There are many ways to have fun that is cost effective. You don’t always have to pay an arm and a leg to feel good.
Keep Track of all Paperwork
If you want to be paying more than what you agreed one, then not keeping tabs on documentation can make you pay more than you wish. It is good to be knowledgeable of a time frame when the repaying of the loan would be up.
Keeping track of paper work means monitor the amount of funds that is being withdraw from your salary on a monthly basis. We are in a technological age so it can be easier to keep tabs by using you devices at the touch of a button.
Usually I ask for a print out or do it myself when I visit the finance office at my university. Yea you can call me old fashion! When I go home I would look at the previous semesters and make the comparisons wether the school fee was raised, the interest rate and areas for charges.
Because of keeping track at all times I was able to get a rembursement of $9,000 that was mistakenly charged to my account. This was one account of three mistaken charges. It can save you by just rechecking.
Many companies have tons of people dealing with. No one is perfect but do not allow mistakes to be made with your payments.
Be A Go-Getter
You may still be in college. You can do a part time job while going classes and this will be able to reduce the amount of money you will pay when you finish. Even if it is to pay down a $50 per month this could take off your interest charges.
Seek scholarships: If you know you are an “A” or average student with a good GPA, then the chance is that there are scholarships within your area. Sometimes students who are on a student loan are not eligible however, you can seek out these scholarships by visiting the student aid office on campus or find businesses around the town area that may be offering grants. All some require of you is to do a little 20 or so hours of volunteer service.
While in college if you get other assistance than the student loan, take it and put a hold on the loan for a year or so, or you can still be on the loan and use the money as a payment towards covering it. Whichever works best for you.
Moving May Work
As I earlier talked about living within your means this is an option that may work for you. You can move back with your parents. You may not like the though but this could save your a few bucks that you would be spending on rent and bills every month.
Even if you contribute to the bill expenses at home this it will not be as high as what you would be paying for rent. You can try turning the basement into a little apartment for yourself for the next two years until the loan is covered.
Oh and remember you are an adult so do not take it for granted living on your folks. Show some level of independence. Have a positive outlook as you focus on the goal of clearing your. Repaying your loan faster is the aim.
