10 Quick and Easy Meal Ideas for College Students

There are certain things that any college student should always have in their cupboard. If these are not in your cupboard then you may not be a college student. Some of these are: peanut butter, jelly or jam, canned food, cereal and noodles. A student that usually lives on a tight budget normally have these things in store just in case the complimentary shows up.

These meal ideas should take 30 minutes or less. As a college student, there are usually days when all you are able to do is hit the books. There is no time to prepare a 1 -3hr meal. Here are some simple meal ideas that you can have any time of the day if you are not a picky person.

There is really no need in giving instructions on these simple meal ideas but for those who may have never tried preparing a meal I will give a little guidance.

So before I start I hope you have all the basic utensils that every college student should have in their room/kitchen. 

  1. Stove/Hotplate/Microwave
  2. Spoon, Knife and Fork
  3. Large bowl
  4. Flat eating plate and a small dish
  5. 2 Pots. One to fry and one to boil
  6. Can opener

So What’s on the Menu?


Soup is a very nutritious meal. Eating soup can make you feel energized. Also, it is easily digestible and can make you feel full.  Making soup is a good idea if your friends are visiting. Of all the items on the list, this may take the longest 20-30 minutes. It is very affordable and easy to make. This meal will do well if your r feeling sick or on  a cold evening.


  1. Pumpkin
  2. Soup Noodle mix
  3. 1 Hot pepper
  4. Carrots
  5. Garlic
  6. Scallion and thyme
  7. Uncooked Chicken strips
  8. Green bananas
  9. Red and green peas


  1. Put water to boil in pot
  2. Wash, peel and dice vegetables( carrot, pumpkin, potatoes, green bananas,)
  3. Put chicken strips to boil in water for 10 min
  4. Add all vegetables and let cook for 10 min
  5. Place a whole pepper in pot or cut a piece and place in to add flavor
  6. Add soup chicken noodle and allow to cook for another 8 minutes
  7. All done.

Sandwiches or Hot dog roll.

Believe me creating one of these will not make you miss going to the subway or burger king. You can make whatever type of sandwich you like. Egg, cheese, vegetable, tuna etc. Use some of those vegetables you have laying around waiting to spoil in the refrigerator.


  1. 2 slices of bread
  2. 1 hot dog roll
  3. Lettuce
  4. Tomatoes
  5. Avacado
  6. Chicken Breast
  7. Mayonnaise
  8. Mustard
  9. Bottle pepper


Hot Dog

  1. Put a small amount of water to boil frankfurters for 3 minutes.
  2. Remove sausage from pot to cool and place into roll
  3. Add ketchup, mustard or mayonnaise as you please to your hot dog
  4. All done


  1. Ensure that your preferred protein is all done…..(Fried egg, tuna etc)
  2. Slice tomatoes, onions, avocado, lettuce
  3. Place vegetables on both sides of bread equally.
  4. Add protein on top of vegetable.
  5. Add mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup etc.
  6. Close sandwich and use Knife to cut in 2
  7. All done.



Cereals are rich in fiber, potassium, vitamin and calcium. This meal is very delicious. You can have it hot or cold. You can use whatever type of milk that you are comfortable with. You can also try the meal adding different fruits.


  1. Banana
  2. Milk
  3. Oatmeal- regular
  4. Honey
  5. Blueberry


  1. Add oatmeal to a bowl
  2. Slice a banana
  3. Wash blueberries and add to the bowl
  4. Add a little honey to sweeten
  5. If you want porridge add extremely hot milk and stir
  6. If you want  cereal add cool milk and stir.
  7. Let it sit for 1 minute.
  8. All done.

Sphattie/ Macaroni and Cheese Dish

Macaroni and cheese is very easy to make and the ingredients and instructions are usually on the box. If you want something that is cheesy this is the choice that you need to make.


  1. Milk
  2. Macaroni and cheese package
  3. 4 Frankfurters/ Sausage sliced
  4. Butter
  5. Diced onions, tomatoes and scallion.


  1. Put water to boil
  2. Add macaronies when boiling and stir occasionally
  3. Strain off the water and add preferred milk.
  4. Slice frankfurters or sausage and add to macaroni.
  5. Add cheese package that comes with macaroni, add butter and minced vegetables.
  6. stir and let simmer for 2 minutes. Let cool for a minute.
  7. All done.

Fried Plantain and Nuggets


  1. Oil
  2. chicken nuggets
  3. plantain
  4. Ketchup


  1. Slice plantains with knife.
  2. Let frying pan hot with a little oil.
  3. Add plantains to fry. (Monitor plantains to not let them burn)
  4. Place fried plantains on a flat plate layer with a napkin
  5. Stir fry as many chicken nuggets as you please or heat in microwave
  6. Add ketchup to nuggets.
  7. All done.

Peanut butter and jelly Everything

The good old peanut butter and jelly sandwich can never get stale. As some of the world most successful people who struggled to be where they are today and some might just tell you that all they had to eat was peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When the cupboard is empty this should still be there.

You can have it with bread, cookies, crackers, bun, bagels, biscuit or whatever you feel.


  1. Peanut butter
  2. Jam, jelly
  3. Bread/biscuits/bun/ bagel etc


  1. Get peanut butter and jam with dry pastry on the table
  2. Use knife or spoon to remove jam or peanut butter and wipe it on the bread.
  3. Add peanut butter or jam to one side of bread to make the sandwich.
  4. Slice sandwich in 2 as preferred
  5. All done.

Mashed Potatoes


  1. Potatoes
  2. Mayonnaise
  3.  1/2 Onion
  4. 1/2 Sweet pepper
  5. 1 Tomato


  1. Put pot with hot water to boil
  2. Wash, peel and dice Irish potatoes
  3. Add potatoes and let it cook until tender
  4. Strain water from potatoes and let cool.
  5. Mince tomatoes, sweet pepper and half of an onion
  6. Add minced vegetables, mayonnaise and to potatoes and mixed
  7. place salad in a bowl and place inside the refrigerator to cool.
  8. All done.

The Good Old Canned Food.


Colleg is a time to be creative and experiment with food. There is always a substitute to replace something when there is shortage. Canned food goes well with pancakes, waffles, fried dumplings or even bread. If you have to get some assignments done and don’t have much time to cook a big meal this is the way to go. this is very easy to prepare.


  1. Onion
  2. Tomato
  3. Hot pepper
  4. Sweet pepper
  5. Oil
  6. Butter


  1. Slice or mince onion, tomatoes, and pepper.
  2. Put frying pan to heat with a little oil or butter.
  3. Use can opener to open tin of preferred protein
  4. Add vegetables to oil and stir.
  5. Add protein to mixture
  6. All done

There are usually leftovers in the fridge a student. It may just be able to go with the protein prepared. You can have this with bread, rice etc. These simple meals will help you to capitalize on the time you spend cooking. During the week, there may be little time to cook so leave the big cooking for weekends.

You can use any of these for your breakfast, lunch or dinner. Also you can complement your meals with a nice glass of fruit juice.
